DoH launches iPhone drink tracker app

The Department of Health has published a free mobile phone application allowing people keep track of their drinking over the festive period

The application, available on the NHS Choices website and iTunes, can help work out how many alcoholic units there are in a glass of wine, a pint of beer, champagne cocktails, a tequila slammer or a Harvey Wallbanger.

The drinks tracker is available only for Apple iPhones and iPods, although the site offers similar software for Windows and Mac desktop computers.

Individuals concerned about their livers can use the application to tot up how much alcohol they have consumed over a set period, such as a week or month, and get personalised feedback on their drinking habits. It also includes information about local NHS clinics and advice centres.

"It is all too easy to lose track of how much you drink," warned health minister Gillian Merron. "So as the festive parties start to build up, this innovative tool will help people keep tabs on their drinking – wherever they are."

"It's one of many ways the government is helping people to understand how much they are drinking. Sticking within the NHS recommended limits means you reduce the risk of serious conditions such as mouth cancer and strokes."

People without an Apple device can text the word 'UNIT' to '64746' to receive information on calculator.
