NHS BSA favours Capita for dental data deal

The NHS Business Services Authority is set to award Capita a £100m seven year deal to process claims made by dentists for NHS treatment

The firm said it has "entered into exclusive dialogue" with the authority to provide services to manage the IT and improve the efficiency of the 40m dental claims processed and paid every year.

In an announcement made to the Stock Exchange, Capita added that the contract is likely to be finalised this year and the initial seven year deal will be worth slightly more than £100m.

NHS BSA and its current suppliers are expected to transfer 150 staff to Capita if the deal goes ahead. The staff were informed at the same time as the announcement was made on 21 September 2009.

Alistair McDonald, chief operating officer for the NHS BSA, said: "Following the evaluation of final tenders from CSC and Capita, I can confirm the supplier we are minded to appoint is Capita.

"This decision is still however subject to a full approval process by the Department of Health, which must agree the authority's business case before the contract can be officially awarded in December 2009. Announcing the evaluation result allows the process of transition to the new contract to commence. Transition will finish when the service transfers on 1 July 2010."

Capita has also recently announced a £3.3m, three year deal to provide outsourced IT services to more than 1,200 staff at NHS Hounslow primary care trust. It will reduce the trust's usage of servers through virtualisation, which the firm said will improve performance, reliability and security.
