Staff and patients have reported problems with the system, which went live at the start of June, ranging from not being able to access notes and staff having to stay behind for an extra two hours to put data into the system.

Comments posted by patients on the North West Evening News website reveal patient and staff frustration with the system. One poster said: "Staff were frustrated as they could not access the system to look at the notes, results of tests carried out by the GP or a referral letter. In the end, I was asked why were we there! Staff had to go to the scan department to get copies of the results as they couldn't get into the Lorenzo system to see them."

A recent presentation given by Patrick McGahon, director of service and commercial development, during a board meeting revealed a number of flaws with the system including backlogs in translating referrals into episodes of care.

"Lorenzo went through a testing regime that included a wide range of users," said McGahon in a statement given to SmartHealthcare.com.

"As we were an early adopter of the system, we anticipated that there would be issues that would be identified when the system went live in a hospital setting with real staff and patients.

"Our staff have been extremely proactive in reporting any issues they come across and also ideas about how we can improve the functionality of the system. If we can fix it internally, we will do this immediately."

He goes on to say that any problems that cannot be fixed internally will get the external support required and in the "intervening period" the trust will provide a "work around".

"We are continuing to work through the issues that have been identified. The regular system updates we are receiving from CSC provide us with the fixes to many of the issues that are reported," McGahon added.

The trust completed the move to Lorenzo two months later than the end of March deadline set by the Department of Health's chief information officer Christine Connelly, amidst staff apprehension about changing from the previous iPM system.
