Wirral Hospital launches Cerner in A&E

Wirral University Teaching Hospital foundation trust has started implementation of Cerner's Millennium software in its emergency department

Luke Readman, director of information at the trust, said it is using what it calls 'Wirral Millennium' in the accident and emergency department, to support clinical trials, and for ordering and receiving results for all pathology and radiology tests.

"Perhaps more significantly this includes interfacing of our existing system, PCIS, with Wirral Millennium so that patient registrations are synchronised between the two systems and results are available to be viewed in both systems."

Readman said that this was to ensure the phased transition to the new system and avoid risks associated with adopting a big bang approach.

The A&E department began using the new system at about 9am on 31 May 2010 and the trust said that by midnight approximately 250 patients had been seen and treated using the new system.

"The response to the system from our staff has been very encouraging," Readman added.

The trust next plans to move clinical and clerical staff to Millennium for tasks including outpatient appointment bookings, patient correspondence, management of medical records, and statutory reporting.

Millennium will eventually automate all the trust's core care processes by providing an integrated medical record and enabling the information to be shared security across hospital departments.

The trust will use Cerner's PowerTrials software, replacing paper-based clinical trials processes and providing an interface between a legacy PAS system and Millennium. In addition it will move historical clinical results, automate electronic discharge summaries and GP letters and provide an integrated reporting functionality using Cerner's PowerInsight.
